The Death of the Man-Bun and Bushy Beard

I hate to be the one to tell all those poor guys this, but the man bun and beard are dead.

Yes, for quite some time now we’ve seen dudes rocking more hair on their heads and faces than well, almost since we first became a species. Instagram accounts were created to worship this look, and guys everywhere were borrowing their girlfriend’s hair ties.

Lumbersexual saw a rise, and it looked like us urban folk had been living amongst the men of the woods. It started out pretty harmlessly, but then things went to the extreme. It was hair on hair on hair.

However, as summer approaches and dudes have finally gotten their hair long enough to keep it out of their faces, the fashion industry is going to make sure all those months and years of hard work, aka not doing anything, are destroyed.

I have been telling friends for a while now that summer 2015 will see the death of all the hair, but now it truly seems like it is coming to fruition, or rather the end.

As someone who works closely with many fashion influencers and insiders, I have been gifted the privilege of knowing what is happening behind the scenes, and the truth is, excessive hair has had its moment.

Yes, we’ve seen tons of advertising with this trend on main display, but like all trends, they must come to an end. The anit-cool cool look is slowly, but surely being phased out as we see more money being spent in fashion once again like in the 80’s, which was the heyday of pure beauty, glamour, and close shaves from face to toe.

Whether you realize it or not, the fashion industry subconsciously tells you how you want to look. I believe Meryl Streep’s character, Miranda Priestly, says it best in The Devil Wears Prada,  “that blue was picked out precisely for you.”  So as we head back into a chic age of fashion as a trend, not just a classic style, get ready to feel like you do in fact want to ditch all the hair.

I almost feel bad for all the guys, who finally found game because they could grow an oversized bush on their face, or experimented with some version of an undercut gone a wry, or just let pure laziness flow into a look.

Sure, long hair on specific people will always look amazing, and the same holds true for beards, but we’ve now reached the point in the journey where we must literally cut our loses, or gains in this respect, and feel the sun shine on that hairless head of yours.

To be honest, the main point I think so many men need to take away from this, is that yes, experimentation is part of fashion. However, finding your own personal style never goes out of style.

AEO Makes Me Hot (Pink)

While spring may have sprung upon us for only a hot minute, it didn't stop me from embracing the warmer fashion.

I'm a sucker for a shorter short, neon and anything that makes me look tan, so when these AEO 8" Prep Shorts came across my path I knew it was a match made in my fashion dreams.

I always think a cuff on any article of clothing polishes up a look, but keeps the overall vibe comfy casual. Neon can also be hard to wear, so when you have something as bright as these bad boys, it's a great idea to tone it down with a neutral counterpart like this woven grey sweater. A pop of white from a crisp tee poking out, some cool personal accessories and a killer smile complete the look.

Style is meant to be fun, and how can you not have fun in hot pink?!

Suitable Suit Pants Done Casual

Guys often forget that a suit is not just a suit. It's three outfits in one.

I recently had an amazing custom suit made from Suitable NYC and the crushed cranberry color was too cool to let sit in my closet.

Barrett wears a custom Denim Jacket, Suitable NYC Cranberry Suit Pants, American Apparel T, and Old Navy Tennis Shoes.

I rolled the pants up to give it a more casual look and VOILA!

You have the pants, the jacket and the two together. Mix up the pieces, dress them up, dress them down, and remember they don't have to stay together!

Just A Little Bit Of Grey

Because why not?

Howe Graphic Grey Tee

Washington Square Park, NYC

Washington Square Park, NYC

I love going back to my beloved NYU roots, and I did just that by heading to my "campus," Washington Square Park, and throwing on a solid tee. This Howe tee is basic and simple, but has enough pattern to give this outfit just enough interest. There is something so effortless about a great tee and a rolled up sleeve that I am a big fan of.

Recycle Your Closet

I've always believed in recycling. It's good for the environment, it helps reduce waste and it breathes new life into what something once was.

When you consider this idea in terms of fashion, it truly allows you to stand apart in an endless homogenous world where everyone wears the same thing.

This is what I am talking about:

Levi's 511 Jeans from my closet circa 2007 with my own version of the American Flag.

A quick trip to the art store, 5 dollars, 2 small things of fabric pain, and boom you have brand new custom vintage Levi's.

Innovative. Resourceful. Recycling.

In a world where everything old eventually becomes new again, it's smart to hold on to some of your staple pieces because you never know when they will become the "it" thing to have.

Yes, not everyone wants a flag on their ass, but I am sure you can find something cool to doodle onto your cheeks.

Get creative. Have fun with it, and worse comes to worse you get rid of something you probably weren't wearing anyways.

Throwing It Back With PUMA

Now this is a story all about how my life got flipped-turned upside down, and I would like to take a minute just sit right there, and I'll tell you how I became the Fresh Prince of...

PUMA Sport Track Jacket '90

PUMA Sport Track Jacket '90

Yes, this is totally the Fresh Prince's theme song, but when the 90's are revived you pay homage to Will Smith's greatest role.

So I have to admit, it’s been a while since I threw it back to the old school, but the 90’s are back in a big way, and I found myself being drawn back to my roots.

Barrett wears: Sport Black Track Jacket '90, Black Heat Tech Uniqlo T-Shirt, Red Tailored PUMA Sweatpants, Black | Steel Grey Faas 600 v2 PUMA Running Sneakers, Half United Silver Limited Edition Bullet Necklace

I was a huge fan of PUMA back in the day, and when I happened to find myself amongst their fall line I was totally into it.

Things are not just as they were, but tailored, tapered and modernized in a way that I can totally get on board with.

Not to mention the fact that sports apparel has become super acceptable as normal daywear.

PUMA Red Tailored Sweat Pants

PUMA Red Tailored Sweat Pants

I am not necessarily a huge fan of trends as I think you should find what works for you, experiment here and there, and hone your style to your personal taste. But this is a trend I am definitely for!

My style has always been slightly influenced by the 90's, I mean it's when I grew up. So to see it's dominance this year has been a fun fashion trend in my opinion.

DSC_0681.jpg

I have been donning my gym sneaks with my jeans since I was in college, and lets just say some of my more fashionable friends did not approve. However, as a man on the go and an athlete, I really wasn’t worried about what was on my feet.

Now sneakers have taken on whole new categories, and truly become a fashion staple. So when the fashion industry decided to combine comfort and fashion, I said, “count me in!”

Here are some of my personal favorites from PUMA’s recent revival, and collaboration with some cool cats.
